Abstract
1416761 Extraction of metal values from sulphidic materials INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 21 Feb 1973 [22 Feb 1972] 8448/73 Heading C1A Finely divided sulphidic mineral materials, e.g. ores and concentrates, containing one or more non-ferrous metal values are reacted at a temperature not exceeding 110‹ C. with an aqueous acidic solution containing hexavalent chromium, e.g. sulphuric acid admixed with a chromate or dichromate of sodium, potassium, or ammonium or chromic acid, in order to both oxidize most of the sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur and sulphate and to dissolve the metal value or values. The resulting slurry is then heated in an autoclave to a temperature above the melting point of sulphur to melt the sulphur, the reaction mixture is cooled to form pellets containing the sulphur, unreacted sulphides and any precious metals present, and the pellets are then separated from the solution containing the dissolved metal values. Metals recovered by the process include Ni, Co, Cu, Pb and Zn. If Fe is present, it may be precipitated from the leach liquor containing ferric sulphate as ferric hydroxide by raising the pH to above 2. The spent aqueous acidic solution may be regenerated electrolytically.
