Description

Bekledningsmateriale som forhindrer vedheftning og vekst av andeskjell og lignende.
Foreliggende oppfinnelse angår en anordning til forhindring av vekst og vedheftning av andeskjell og lignende på flater under vann.
Det er kjent at polytetrafluoretylen hefter meget dårlig eller omtrent ikke til andre overflater. Der er imidlertid fremstillet overtrekksmidler som inneholder polytetrafluoretylen i kolloidal tilstand og disse overtrekksmidler hefter godt til forskjellige overflater. Således er f. eks. slike over-trekkmidler påført konstruksjoner for anvendelse under vann og der er herved oppnådd gode beskyttende virkninger. Det er imidlertid observert at slike overtrekk ikke forhindrer vedheftning og vekst av andeskjell og lignende organismer på de konstruksjoner de anvendes på. Forsøk som er utført ved Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California (gjengitt i en publika-sjon fra Department of Na vy, Bureau of Ships, med tittel «Protective Coatings for Shipbottoms», NS-061-002 15. august 1955) førte til den konklusjon at polytetrafluor-etylenovertrekk (påført i form av suspen-sjoner) ikke viste noen virkning mot vekst av undervannsorganismer som andeskjell. Vekst av undervannsorganismer fant nem-lig raskt og rikelig sted på således behandlede overflater på samme måte som på ikke giftige overflater som glass, tre, bløtt stål og porselen.
Foreliggende oppfinnelse er basert på
den erkjennelse at i skarp motsetning til de hittil beskrevne resultater forhindres vekst av andeskjell og lignende organismer
når polytetrafluoretylenet påføres overfla-ten i form av en i det vesentlige ugjennomtrengelig folie eller hinne, til forskjell fra
overtrekk erholdt ved å påføre en suspen-sjon av polytetrafluoretylen eller andre overtrekksmidler inneholdende kolloidalt polytetrafluoretylen.
Polytetrafluoretylen-ark eller -folier som er i det vesentlige ugjennomtrengelige
for væsker, kan fremstilles ved midler som nå er vel kjente i teknikken. De kan fåes med hvilkensomhelst ønsket tykkelse.
I spesielle utførelsesformer for oppfinnelsen er arkene eller foliene tykkere enn
vanlige overtrekk og har hensiktsmessig en tykkelse på omkring 0,05 til 1,5 mm.
Skip hvis skrog er bekledt med poly-tetrafluoretylenfolier har tallrike fordeler i tillegg til at de er fri for vekst av andeskjell. Friksjonen mellom overflater som er overtrukket med polytetrafluoretylen og vann er ytterst liten og slike overflater er relativt motstandsdyktige mot aldring.
Ved utførelsen av foreliggende oppfinnelse kan man bruke en hvilkensomhelst metode til befestigelse av polytetrafluor-etylenfoliene til underlaget. Man kan f. eks. klebe dem fast til dette. En særlig fordel-aktig klebemetode består i å gjøre den overflate av polytetrafluoretylenarkene som skal fastklebes ru med en oppløsning av natrium i ammoniakk, påføre denne ru overflate et epoksyharpiks-klebestoff og foreta fastklebningen.
Oppfinnelsen belyses ytterligere ved hjelp av de følgende eksempler.
Eksempel 1: Et glatt ugjennomtrengelig ark (1,5 mm's tykkelse) av polytetrafluoretylen ble festet til en stålplate som ble fastnaglet til bunnen på en båt. Den således behandlede plate med tilstøtende partier av båtens bunn ble i 6 uker holdt under vann ved betingelser for vekst av andeskjell i Sassa-fraselven i Maryland. Veksten av andeskjell var rask på partiene av båtens bunn utenfor platen og på andre overflater, men polytetrafluoretylenoverflaten var fullsten-dig fri for slik vekst. Vedføyede tegning er en reproduksjon av båtens bunn etter utfø-relsen av denne prøve.
Eksempel 2: Et ugjennomtrengelig ark av polytetrafluoretylen med 0,25 mm's tykkelse ble kle-bet på bunnen av en båt av tre ved å gjøre begge overflater på arket ru med en opp-løsning av natrium i ammoniakk med på-følgende fastklebning av arket til båtens bunn ved hjelp av et epoksyharpiks-klebestoff (handelsvare). Sammenklebningen ble herdet ved å legge en aluminiumfolie over polytetrafluoretylenarket og legge et varmt jern mot aluminiumfolien. Folien ble derpå tatt bort. Halvparten av den frittliggende overflate ble slipt for å fjerne det klebbare sjikt som var frembrakt av oppløsningen av natrium i ammoniakk. Den annen halvpart av den frittliggende overflate ble ikke slipt. Det hele ble så holdt under vann ved betin gelser for vekst av andeskjell i fire måne-der. Der var rikelig vekst av andeskjell på båtens bunn utenfor arket og langs arkets kanter. På selve arket var veksten bare omkring tiendeparten så tett på den ikke slipte halvdel og omkring en tredevtedel så tett på den halvdel hvorfra det klebbare sjikt var fjernet ved slipning.
Disse eksempler tjener bare til å illu-strere oppfinnelsen.
Eksempel 2 viser at en glatt frittliggende overflate (i dette tilfelle gjort glatt ved slipningen) beskytter bedre mot vekst av andeskjell enn en klebende eller ru overflate, men at også en ru eller klebende polytetrafluoretylenoverflate i betydelig grad hindrer vekst av sådanne organismer.

Claims (2)

1. Bekledningsmateriale for skipsbun-ner og andre undervannskonstruksjoner, karakterisert ved at i det minste de partier av konstruksjonene som ligger under van-nets overflate er bekledt med polytetrafluoretylen i form av på forhånd fremstil-lede ugjennomtrengelige ark eller folier.
