Abstract
Description
Title: Method for sorting bulb and tuberous fruits by size, particularly suitable for potatoes.
The invention relates to a method for sorting bulbous and tuberous fruits in successive size classes, in particular suitable for sorting potatoes.
In the potato trade and processing industry, internationally applied square measurements are used to sort potatoes in different size classes. The square size of a potato can be defined as the length of the side of the small square opening that the potato can pass through. The potatoes are sorted into a number of classes using sieves, for example, a first class of potatoes with a square size smaller than 35 mm, a next class of potatoes with a square size between 35 and 45 mm, etc. Although an acceptable accuracy can be achieved with such a sorting method, a negligible number of potatoes always falls into an incorrect class. These are for the most part potatoes with a square size that is close to the limit value of a class. If, for example, sorting is done in three size classes of, for example, 20-30 mm, 30-50 mm and 50-70 mm, there is a good chance that of the fruits wrongly entered in the 50-70 mm class, a relatively large number has a square size of between 46 and is 50 mm.
Evenzo bevindt zich in de klasse 30-50 mm meestal eenrelatief groot aantal vruchten met een vierkantsmaattussen 26 en 30 mm.Likewise, in the class 30-50 mm there is usually a relatively large number of fruits with a square size between 26 and 30 mm.
Since the potato trade and processing industry is increasingly demanding sorting in a relatively large number of classes, each of which comprises a relatively small size range, there is a need for an improved sorting method. The object of the invention is to meet the need for sketching. For this purpose, according to the invention, a method of the type described is characterized in that at least one intermediate class is defined in the transition region between at least two successive main classes; that a first sorting run is carried out, in which sorting falls within the remaining area of the at least two main classes and the at least one intermediate class; whereas the selected fruits falling within the remaining area of the major classes are supplied to collections of fruits belonging to those major classes; that the fruits falling within at least one intermediate class are subjected to a second sorting process, wherein the fruits falling in an intermediate class are separated into a first group which belongs to one main class belonging to the relevant intermediate class and a second group to the other belonging to the relevant intermediate class; and that the two groups are added to the collections belonging to the major classes.
In the following, the invention will be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, which schematically illustrates the principle of the method according to the invention.
The figure schematically shows, by way of example, three size classes according to which tuber or bulb fruits, such as potatoes, but also, for example, onions with cut tail, apples, etc. can be sorted. In this example, the size classes I, II and III correspond to dimensions of 20 to 29 mm, 30 to 49 mm and 50 to 69 mm respectively, determined according to the square-size principle. As has already been noted, the majority of the fruit classed in the wrong sorting process has dimensions just below the dimensions associated with the next class of larger fruit.
According to the invention, intermediate classes are now introduced for fruits with dimensions which are close to the limit of the following class. The intermediate class may lie entirely within one of the original classes, but may also overlap the boundary between two original class.
For example, in the example shown, two intermediate classes IV and V are defined for fruits with dimensions between, for example, 26 and 34 mm, and 46 and 54 mm, respectively.
By now sorting not only on the original main classes, but also on the intermediate classes, the majority of the fruits that are wrongly sorted at the original sorting machine end up in one of the intermediate classes.
The other fruits are immediately assigned to the correct collections, as indicated schematically with arrows 1,2 and 3. According to the invention, the fruits which have ended up in the intermediate classes are subjected to a second sorting process, as indicated schematically with blocks 4,5. The second sorting pass need not be performed in a similar manner to the first sorting pass. A more accurate sorting method can advantageously be used for the second sorting process. Although generally accurate sorting methods also cost a relatively long time, this need not be a problem, since there are relatively few fruits in the intermediate classes.
For the second sorting pass, for example, use could be made of the so-called gutter-sorting method, as described in the applicant's Dutch patent application filed simultaneously, according to which method fruits such as potatoes can be sorted on the basis of the square size by the height of the potato which is in a V-shaped gutter, measure.
In the second sorting pass, the fruits in the intermediate class are carefully sorted into two groups, the division between the two groups being formed by the boundary between the original classes. For example, the sorting grades indicated at 4 separate into fruits that are smaller than 30 mm and larger than 29 mm, respectively. The first group is fed to the set 20/29 and the second to the set 30/49 as indicated schematically with arrows 6,7.
Similarly, at 5, the fruits are separated into a first group smaller than 50 mm and a second group larger than 49 mm as indicated by arrows 8.9.
It has been found that when using a two-step sorting method as described above, a sorting accuracy of 97 & 98% is achievable.
