Abstract

The system is used for connecting a ship (1) to a tug boat by a flexible towing cable (20). A winding reel is provided on to which the flexible cable can be wound and whose shaft (8) serves to transmit the towing force to the ship. A large chain link (13) arranged around the shaft of the reel and rotatable on it is connected (18, 19, 21) to the towing cable (20). When not in use, the reel may contain a chain (13, 18, 19) at one end connected (13) to the reel shaft whilst the other end connects (21) to a cable (20) wound on to a larger diameter of the reel.
