Abstract

A ship has a winch (3) and cable (9) for towing an underwater object (7), connected to the cable through a swivel joint (6). The cable is in sections and each section is connected by a joint which, under tension, transmits torque from one section to another. The torque is delivered by a motor (5) hinged on the ship's stern. - The motor housing incorporates a mechanism consisting of a hollow cylinder through which the cable runs and a sliding sleeve which, operated by cams, engages the cylinder (and motor) with the cable when it is deployed. The section of cable on the winch is at the same time released from further load and the towing cable can be turned by the motor.
