Abstract

The measuring instrument (1) comprises a base frame (2) on which are mounted a vertical guide rod (3) with a holder (4) adjustable in height and clamped by a wing nut (5). The holder has on its underside a support flange (6) to retain the spring (19) under test, and this rests on a lower flange (10), carried on a piston rod (9) moving in a vessel (7) and attached to a cup and a flexible membrane (18). The pressure across the membrane is measured by a dial gauge type manometer (11). The mechanical deflection of the spring is measured by clock gauge (20) attached to a vertical support rod (14) parallel with the main vertical guide rod (3). An electronic calculator is used to combine the readings of the pressure and displacement to calibrate the spring.
