Abstract
A protective coating is applied to a metal surface by means of electromagnetic excitation which produces local melting of an intermediate layer of adhesive polymer which bonds the metal to the coating. The coating consists of a polymer which is not melted in the process. The heat is applied by means of an electromagnetic induction coil held above the surface of the coating material and pref. carried in a mobile mounting so that the bonding process can be carried out progressively along the bond interface. The inductor may also be curved to match the profile of the metal surface to be coated, as e.g., in the case of pipe linings. The frequency of the electromagnetic source is pref. in the radio wave band, 200-800 kHz, with a power output equivalent to 25 kW/m of surface to be bonded. The rigid coating polymer is pref. selected from the olefin gp. whilst the bonding material is a synthetic, organic homo- or copolymer with periodic CO gps in the molecular chain. The inductor and source are pref. mounted in a prodn. machine which enables power output, frequency and linear displacement to be remotely controlled in a continuous process. Since the protective coating is not melted, no deformation or crimping occurs during the process.
