Abstract
Ground or surface water is distilled using an evaporator, a condenser, a distilled water reservoir and a pump for drawing a vacuum in the condenser and evaporator. The raw water enters the cooling side of the condenser passes to the evaporator and thence into the hot side of the condenser. It is then passed via the suction pump to the reservoir. The evaporator consists of two alternative heat sources one of which is a solar energy collector, the second being a heater of the conventional type which makes up the energy defficiency required to evaporate the water after it has passed through the solar collector. Pref. the auxiliary heat source is on a separate closed circuit, the heat passing from the heating fluid to the raw water via a calorifier type heat exchanger. This system incorporates an electrical control system for regulating the heat input of the auxiliary heater in accordance with the availability of solar heat and also the level in the calorifier/evaporator. The use of the vacuum pump and solar energy collector minimises the energy required for distn.
