Abstract

The system prevents the formation of sand and mud banks by rivers discharging into open water. An oblong trough (20, 21), closed at both ends, is mounted in the mouth of the river and above the mean water level of the open water, extending for a set distance. Water is delivered continuously to the trough so as to flow over the edges as a waterfall, agitating the water below into which it falls and thus maintaining the sand and mud in a suspended state. This prevents the formation of a sandbank along the trough or near it. There can be two such troughs, both extending from the river mouth into open water.
