Abstract

The particles are sepd. from the gas as it passes between two electrodes, one earthed and one at a high voltage. Sepn. efficiency is increased by mechanical atomisation of liq. to form droplets in the gas and films running down the electrodes. The secondary liq. is sprayed in form of relatively coarse droplets and is atomised to form a fog of fine droplets by the high-voltage electrode. The earthed and high-voltage electrodes are arranged to create a simple (one-way) electric field between them only the high voltage electrode acting as emitter-ioniser. The gas-borne contaminants are sepd. by the combined effects of the electric field from the electrodes and the secondary liq. fog, whose particles have the same charge as the high voltage electrode. The slurry is collected and removed from the earthed electrode. Electrostatic prodn. of the secondary fog eliminates the need for spray nozzles with very fine, easily blocked passages. The design of the electrodes prevents formation of a second opposing field which would result in redispersion from the earthed electrode.
