Abstract

In the continuous treatment of chimney gases contg. SO2, the gas is scrubbed in a spray tower with an aq. soln. of a reactant to form a prim. product (1) and the soln. is then fed through a full reactor in which product (1) forms a sec., stable reaction product (2); reactor (2) is continuously monitored in two separate zones where the pH is measured, compared with a standard value and used for automatic process control; part of the soln. in the reactor is continuously removed for pptn. of product (2) and return of the soln. to the reactor, whereas another part of the soln. in the reactor is recycled through the tower. The monitors are pref. linked to obtain an optimum concn. in the recycled soln. pref. reactants including Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, Na2CO3.
