Abstract
Rapier loom is fitted with a sley varrying a reed, a weft insertion mechanism with two grippers (one to feed and one to take over the pick), fixed and movable thread guides for the weft ends to be selected, and a shear. Before the end of the yarn is drawn into the shed by the gripper, it is subjected to a preliminary acceleration. The movable thread guide between the cloth and the fixed guides is controlled in such a way that the length of the section of weft thread, between the edge of the cloth and the fixed guide, is increased from its limited amt. to a greater amt., just before the feeder gripper takes the pick in. Similarly, the length of thread between the feeder gripper and the fixed guide is increased just before the weft is clamped by the takeover gripper, so as to reduce the acceleration of the thread at the fixed guide. The weft is accelerated to the speed of the grippers uniformly and progressively so that a balloon can be set up and maintained at the supply spool. The relative speed between the thread and the grippers, during the acceleration phase is reduced to nearly zero.
