Wefts in the form of metal or plastic wires are inserted in hollow flexible tubes which are reciprocated into the shed. In one embodiment a flexible tube 40 is reciprocated into the shed from one side and wire 409 is fed by rollers 410 from the other side through short rigid tube 401 into the end of tube 1 when it reaches the tube 401. Rod 401 is reciprocated by a disc 437 oscillated by a rack and pinion 435, 436 driven from the loom shaft 406. In a modification the flexible tube is wound around a drum 537, Fig. 7 at the side of the shed and may insert the wire 510, fed thereto through axial and spiral passages 537', 537, right through the shed or hand it to a short rigid tube. The weft wire is tensioned by a spring loaded pivoted arm 551 and clamped by grippers 552, 553 and 554 and cut by cutters 555 on the insertion side of the shed. Sleys, reeds. The reed dents may have apertures 115, Fig. 3, to guide the insertion tube with slots 116 communicating with the shed. Alternatively a second reed 220, Fig. 4, with warp wire slots equal to the number of warps in the upper sheet of the shed and grooves 215 for guiding the tube may be pivoted to the top of the first reed so that it can be pivoted away therefrom to release the inserted weft wire, and is moved transversely of the first reed by one dent space at each change of shed to allow alternate warp sheets to pass between its dents.
