Abstract

Current limiting device consisting of a hermetically sealed chamber capable of withstanding high internal temperatures and pressures. The inside wall consists of an electrically insulating material and the chamber contains electrodes which are connected to external cables. The quantity of filling material in the chamber whether solid or liquid, is chosen such that it will only occupy part of the volume of the chamber at normal conditions of temperature and pressure. The chamber will be completely filled when the temperature is raised to a value near the critical temperature of the liquid or solid. The two contact pieces (3, 5) are inserted in opposite walls of the chamber (2) with insulated entry glands. The material in the chamber is electrically conducting. The space not filled with the conducting material is filled with gas.
