Abstract
The MW of thermoplastic polyesters is increased by heating an intimate mixt. of the polyester and 0.5-10 wt. % (on polyester) of an oxide of a Gp. Vb metal to a temp. the m.pt. of the polyester. Method overcomes problems of MW reduction encountered e.g. when making flame-retardant polyesters by melt compounding the polyester with a bromine-contg. flame retardant agent and a synergistic amt. of a Gp. V oxide, esp. Sb2O3, by melt compounding e.g. in an extruder. Lower MW base polyester which has lower viscosity and easier processing characteristics may thus be used.
