Abstract

Self-extinguishing thermoplastic materials comprise an organic polycondensate and a fireproofing agent consisting of 5-80 wt. % red P passivated by 95-20 wt. % polycarbonate. The passivated red P is prepd. by treating red P with a soln. of polycarbonate in halogenated hydrocarbon evaporating the solvent and opt. melting and granulating the mixt. The polycarbonate-passivated red P can be incorporated safely into the thermoplastics without risk of fire or adversely affecting the mechanical properties of the thermoplastics. In the case of polyesters based on arom. dicarboxylic acids incorporation of the passivated red P may even lead to an increase in rigidity. The mouldings also have excellent current leakage resistance. The passivated P does not smell of hydrogen phosphide.
