Abstract

Mixtures comprising both a heavy component and a light component are separated by (a) subjecting mixt. to extractive distillation using a relatively non-volatile solvent which has a greater affinity for the heavy than the light component, (b) recovering the light component as a first varpour stream and the heavy component and solvent as a liquid stream, (c) recovering the heavy component as a second vapour stream from the liquid stream, and (d) recycling a portion of the second vapour stream as reboil vapours to the extractive distillation. The process can be used for separation of acetylene and ethylene, butane and butene, butene and butadiene, vinylacetylene and butadiene, styrene and ethyl benzene, benzene and cyclohexane, butane and vinyl chloride, propane and propylene, propylene and allene, allene and methyl acetylene, pentene and isoprene.
