Abstract

The cable tension measuring system uses a set of three rollers of similar size, two fixed rollers (1) on the outside and one movable roller (2) on the inside. The movable roller is deflected out of the path of the cable by an applied force to make an angular (alpha) with the undisturbed cable path, the angular inclination being derivable from the lateral displacement (6) of the cable caused by the measuring roller. The latter is mounted on a rigid beam with a knife edge pivot at one end and a pressure sensitive load cell at the other. The beam supporting the deflecting roller is driven by a pair of servomotors at either end. The pressure (P) on the cell is simply 25 x (sine alpha) where (S) is the cable tension.
