Abstract
The unit gives higher current densities, leading to increased plating speed, and high thickness uniformity across the width. It consists of a busbar extending diagonally over an electrolyte container, the latter being coated with the electrode metal or a metal which can be easily fused with it. The whole is coated with corrosion resistant metal to form a unit which, electrically insulated at its lower face, and connected as anode, lies alongside the strip to be plated, and is wider than it. Pref. electrode material is Cu plated with Pb which forms Pb chromate preventing further corrosion and increasing anode life. In an example, a strip speed of 300 m/min. and effective current at 20% of applied were obtd. using 3 mm. thick PVC insulation, improvements at 40% and 5.5% resp. The bath contained 50 g/l. CrO3 and 500 ppm. H2SO4.
