Abstract

The pump has inlet and outlet valves and a chamber accommodating a compression plunger, whose stroke is variable by a mechanism incorporating a wedge piece. The wedge piece (26, 33) is spring-loaded against a supporting surface, typically by a leaf spring coupling it to a control member. The gradient of the wedge piece ramp face can be less than 1:10, typically 1:14. The plunger can be driven by an electromagnet, its maximum stroke being roughly 1mm. The plunger can be coupled to the free end of the electromagnet armature, which pivots, there being more iron at the ree end of the armature than at the pivot end, to avoid saturation.
