Abstract
Cleaning of oil-contg. cargo chambers and the control of sediment and deposits in these during the discharge of crude oil, by (a) analysis of the vapour space in the cargo chamber for hydrocarbon content in order to secure a 'too rich' state (b) the discharge of the crude oil from the cargo chamber (c) the simultaneous spraying of crude oil into and against the walls of the cargo chamber to wash away deposits during discharge of the crude oil and to form hydrocarbon vapour for maintaining the 'too rich' conditions (d) the control of the hydrocarbon content of the vapour in the cargo chamber during discharge of and/or to ensure a 'too rich' state and continuation of the crude oil spraying onto the bottom after the cargo chamber is empty to extract binding agents from tank sediment. The cleaning can be carried out with the usual water-washing equipment usually provided before either taking on a new load or ballast. A non-explosive atmosphere, i.e. 'too rich' is maintained in the cargo spaces at all times.
