Abstract
Buoyancy element comprising a closed hollow body of glass-reinforced thermo-hardening resin, with >=1 hollow chambers, partic. for use with underwater drilling pipes e.g. to facilitate lifting these to the surface, in which the hollow chambers are free from gases which are not liquefiable at >30 atmos. at the normal temp. of use of the buoyancy element, and pref. contg. a gaseous medium liquefiable at 5 atmos (gauge). Elimination of the non-condensible gases, partic. air, removes the danger of bursting when the buoyancy element is brought to the surface after submersion at depths of e.g. 2 km where the high pressure causes water to enter by 'sweating' which can only escape slowly at the surface.
