Abstract
A sprayable compsn. for appln. to a foundary casting slab is prepd. from very fine, pure SiO2 powder, water and a binder. The compsn. is cheaper, e.g. half the price of "Nalcote" (RTM) and just as effective. Pref. amorphous SiO2 with >=10% cristobalite, as globules 10 mu m, is used esp. 90% of the granules being =3 mu m. Such SiO2 is available in large amts. as by-prod. in dust-removal plants in the non-ferrous metal industry. A claimed compsn. contains 40-60 wt. % SiO2 granules, 10-20wt. % K or Na water glass 0-10 wt. % anionic polysaccharide or Na CMC and 30-40 wt. % water, and has pH 11. The compsn. is sprayed as a very thin, e.g. 60 mu m, intact layer onto a hot casting slab. After test, by casting with liquid steel, the layer still adhered firmly to the casting slab substrate.
