Abstract

The packing has a tear-open strip joined to it by a butt seam along both edges. The tension strength of the strip in the lengthwise direction in relation to the tension strength of the material of the packing itself in a direction parallel to it, or the strength of the weld seams, is such that the packing tears along lines near the seams, or along the seams themselves, when a peeling force is applied to one end of the strip. The item can be packed by feeding it forward against a curtain formed by a strip of heat-shrinking plastic and one of tear-off material, pulled off opposite rolls and welded together, until the curtain encloses the item as far as its rear edge. The linear speed of the tear-off strip is no more than a quarter of that of the plastic, and the two strips are welded in the transverse direction behind the item and parted off, leaving a continuous curtain behind. The tube enclosing the item is then shrunk to size by heating.
