Abstract

A protective layer is applied to cast-iron parts exposed to corrosive effects by (a) decarburising or Fe-plating the part, at least on the area to be protected; (b) Sn-plating this area; and (c) applying a protective layer consisting of a Pb/Sb alloy contg. 5-10% (pref. ca. 7.5%) Sb. The process can be used to protect engine parts (valve casings, cylinder blocks, etc.) in contact with coolant water, exhaust gases, etc. A specific example is the exhaust gas chambers of turbine compressor systems for marine diesel engines. The Pb/Sb alloys give a more compact and wear-resistant protective layer than pure Pb.
