Plant growth is regulated by applying to plants or to soil a plant growth regulating amt. of a cpd. formula (II) (where R is CHO, COOH or its alkali metal salt, aralkoxycarbonyl, hydroxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, beta-carboxyvinyl, or beta-alkoxy-carbonylvinyl; R' is H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, OH or halogen; R" is lower alkyl, NO2 or halogen; and n is 0, 1 or 2). The effects of (II) on plants vary widely, depending on the rate of application and on the species, growth-stage and ripeness of the plants Effects that can be achieved include improved yields, larger fruits, earlier ripening, delayed dying of plants, growth retardation, and acceleration of growth.
