Abstract

Acetone is made by reacting mesityl oxide with water in the liquid phase in the presence of an acid and/or an acid compound and a primary amine and/or a Schiffs base, and recovering the resulting acetone from the reaction mixt. by distilln. The reaction is pref. carried out at a temp. of 25-225 degrees C and esp. at a temp. whereby the acetone formed distils directly out of the reaction mixt. The process is esp. useful for the conversion of mesityl oxide resulting as by-product from the prodn. of 4-oxocapronitrile by the reaction of acetone with acrylonitrile.
