Abstract

Pseudocumene is reacted with 1-10 moles, per mole of pseudo cumene, of a peracid of pKa >7.0 in the presence of 1-150 wt.%, based on pseudocumene, of a catalyst which is an acid of pKa 3.0 or a Lewis acid at a temp. of 0 degrees-100 degrees C to give 2,3,6-trimethylbenzoquinone, which on reduction is converted to 2,3,6-trimethyl-hydroquinone, a starting material for the synthesis of vitamin E. The method is simpler than known methods involving several stages or use of strong peracids.
