Abstract

Interpolymerisation of 25-99% of polymer A- of (a) at least 50% of methyl methacrylate, (b) up to 50% of an alkyl acrylate or vinyl acetate, (c) up to 20% based o n A of a monomer copolymerisable with (a); with 1-75% of a rubber copolymer B- of (1) ethylene, (2) vinyl acetate, alkyl acrylate, alkyl methacrylate, where alkyl has C1-18, acrylic or methacrylic acid (3) monomer copolymerisable with (1). A radical initiator (I) isused at 10-150 degrees C for the interpolymerisation giving an amount of A in the final product of 2-98%. The composition has excellent shock resistance, and transparency, because the interpolymerisation is practically complete. The products which have a glossy surface are used for moulding car accessories, containers etc. In stage 1 A and B are interpolymerised with 0.01-10 wt.% of I based on A at an hourly conversion rate of at least 3%, up to 90% polymerisation of A and then in stage 2 it is further polymerised with 5% I based on A at a rate of at least 1% with more A to obtain a proportion of B of 1-25 wt.% using 1% based on A of a chain transfer agent.
