Abstract

Poly-1,4-oxyphenylenes. Prepn. is by the oxidation of aromatic monocyclic monooxidised compds. e.g. phenols by O2 in an org. solvent in the present of a catalyst comprising a mixt. of a copper salt and an amine. The use of the following specific solvents e.g. aliphatic mono- or poly-carboxylic acid nitriles e.g. acetonitrile, activates the oxidn. catalyst thus yielding high mol. wt. polymers of high thermal and chemical stability. CuCl is typical copper salt.
