[Also in Division B6] A method of shaping thermoplastic material includes the step of pressing an ultrasonicallyvibrated tool against the material to soften it, the material being simultaneously shaped by the tool itself or by a subsequent compression step using the tool itself or a non-vibrated, preferably cooled, tool. Articles may be moulded from blanks by this method or the surface configuration of already existing articles modified. In the embodiment, illustrated in the Figure, a blank to be shaped is moved upwardly into co-operation with a stationary ultrasonically vibrated shaping tool 29, 30, by a platform 32 actuated by a piston 34. The tool is vibrated through a velocity transformer 27 by means of a magnetostrictive or piezo-electric device 26 located in a cooling bath 23, and may be itself cooled by a conduit 30. In an alternative embodiment (see Fig. 2, not shown) a blank is located in a crown cap and is compressed to a liner by a reciprocable upper vibrated tool. The above method and apparatus is particularly useful with thermoplastic polymers such as butyl rubber, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, low density polyethylene or a mixture of these. Alternatively plasticized P.V.C., rigid P.V.C. or polymethyl-methacrylate may be used.
