Abstract

1453498 Modified hydrocarbon resins HOECHST AG 8 Nov 1974 [10 Nov 1973] 48452/74 Heading C3P Modified hydrocarbon resins comprise the reaction product of a major amount of a cycloaliphatic diene resin with a minor amount of an olefinically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid or derivative thereof, at least 5% of the carboxyl groups in the product being esterified with a mono- and/or poly-hydric alcohol having up to 12 carbon atoms. An olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid may also be included in the reactants. The resin may be further modified by admixture or reaction with another resin, which may be natural or synthetic, and may also include a phenolic component. Residual carboxyl groups may be neutralized. In examples, hydrocarbon resins containing more than 50 wt. per cent units of cyclopentadiene or derivatives thereof and the remainder being aromatic hydrocarbon units, are reacted, either alone or in admixture with colophony or an indene-rich hydrocarbon resin, with either maleic anhydride or a mixture of fumaric and acrylic acids or a mixture of sorbic and tetrahydrophthalic acids, and the products esterified with trimethylolpropane, hexan - 1 - ol, hexan - 2 - ol, benzyl alcohol, mixed neopentyl glycol/2 - ethyl - hexan - 1 - ol or mixed neopentyl glycol/2 - ethyl - hexan - 1 - ol/diphenylolpropane. In one example, calcium acetate is also included in the reactants. Use.-Printing ink binders, especially for toluene-based intaglio printing inks.
