Abstract

1489903 Resinous paint binders VIANOVA KUNSTHARZ AG 29 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973] 51886/74 Addition to 1330992 and 1229759 Headings C3P and C3R Resins suitable as paint binders, e.g. in electrodeposition processes, comprise a mixture or reaction product of (I) 60-95 parts by weight of a product obtained by first reacting 70-90 parts by weight of a diene polymer with 10-30 parts by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, and then esterifying up to 70% of the carboxyl groups in the product by reaction with a mono-alcohol, and (II) 5-40 parts by weight of a non-phenolic polyhydroxy polycarboxylic resin having an acid value of 30-250 mg. KOH/g. and a hydroxyl number of 10-500 mg KOH/g. In examples, component (I) is obtained by reacting liquid polybutadienes of various stereo structures, in one case in admixture with a hydrocarbon resin which is a cyclopentadiene/ methyl cyclopentadiene/isoprene copolymer, with maleic anhydride followed by esterification with either methanol or ethylene glycol monoethyl ether; and component (II) is one of the following: (M) the product of sequential reaction of tall oil fatty acids first with maleic anhydride, then methanol, then styrene/allyl alcohol copolymer, (N) the product of reaction of mixed ethylene glycol/pentaerythritol with the condensate of dehydrated castor oil/rosin/ tall oil fatty acid/maleic anhydride, (P) a condensate of trimellitic anhydride/phthalic anhydride/isophthalic acid/trimethylol propane/ glycidyl ester of C 7-9 monocarboxylic acids, (R) the product of sequential reaction of rosin with triethylene glycol, then maleic anhydride, then trimethylol propane, (S) a copolymer of acrylic acid/ethylene glycol monomethacrylate/2-ethylhexyl acrylate/styrene, and (T) trimellitic anhydride/trimethylol propane condensate. The products of (I) and (II) are water-soluble on neutralization, which in examples is effected with ammonia, triethylamine, N,N-dimethylethanolamine or KOH.
