Description
GELEIDINGSINRICHTING, IN HET BIJZONDER VOOR GEBRUIK BIJ HETGUIDANCE DEVICE, IN PARTICULAR FOR USE IN THE
LASSENWELDING
The present invention relates to a guiding device for use in machining, in particular welding, of curved surfaces, in particular pipe surfaces, and more in particular pipelines.
Such a guiding device generally comprises a flexible elongate body provided with a guide for processing means, and tensioning means for tensioning the flexible body around the curved surface. The invention further relates to a method for welding a pipeline in a number of welding runs using such a guiding device.
There are guide bands with spacers arranged between the guide band and the tube surface. Spring means may be provided therein. Such spacers, however, typically extend over the full width of the guide belt. This has the disadvantage that the friction between the spacers and the tube surface to which the guide band is mounted is quite large, which can lead to an asymmetrical, non-centered arrangement of the guide band around the tube surface, with the springs springing more on one side than on the other side.
To solve this problem, the invention further proposes a guiding device as described in claim 1. By ensuring that the width and length dimensions of the contact surface between each spacer and the tube surface are small with respect to the dimensions of the guide band, the friction is reduced to a minimum and the guide band can be properly centered around a tube surface, the spring means all springing in in a substantially equal manner.
According to an advantageous embodiment, each spacer comprises a spring carrier connected to the guide belt and a spring holder arranged around it, wherein the spring means are preferably plate springs which are active between the spring carrier and the spring holder. This embodiment will be further described with reference to the figures.
When welding pipelines, it is known to use a guide band along which a carrier with one or more welding torches is guided. When laying pipelines at sea, a number of welding steps usually have to take place on the ship, which welding steps take place at different welding stations. According to the known systems, an operator of a welding station, for example with a piece of chalk, will indicate on the pipe to where the welding layer has been laid. The operator of a subsequent welding station must then look up this location and perform a next welding step from this location, wherein a next welding layer is laid down. Such a way of working slows down the welding process and hinders its automation.
The present invention has for its further object to provide a guide device of the type mentioned in the preamble with which a location along the guide device can be determined in a simple and automated manner. To that end, the guiding device is distinguished in that the flexible body is provided along its length with indicators arranged according to a specific pattern, which pattern is such that a certain position along the flexible body can be deduced on the basis of the detection of the indicators.
In that way a location on the flexible body can thus be determined with sufficient accuracy on the basis of the pattern of indicators arranged on the flexible body. At the end of a welding step, the location can thus be determined exactly, and this location can be looked up again before a next welding step.
Preferably, a sensor arranged for detecting these indicators, and a signal processing unit connected to the sensor for determining a location along the flexible body on the basis of the detected indicators, are provided. In this way a specific location along the guide belt can be determined for further use in a simple and automated manner.
According to the preferred embodiment, the indicators are holes. The pattern can for instance consist of at least one row of indicators arranged in the longitudinal direction of the flexible body, for which the mutual distance between adjacent indicators gradually increases. This is a simple pattern that is easy to detect.
According to the preferred embodiment, the pattern comprises a first and a second row of indicators parallel to it, the mutual distance between adjacent indicators increasing in the opposite direction for the first and second row. In this way, the sensor sees the same pattern regardless of the way in which the guiding device is applied to the curved surface (for example, clockwise or counter-clockwise in the case of a tube surface).
Furthermore, the flexible body is preferably a metal band, and the indicators are preferably formed by punching out holes.
According to a possible embodiment, the metal band has a serrated edge. Such an edge makes it possible to drive the carrier of the processing means by means of a driving wheel which engages on this edge.
In the case of a guide band which is arranged around a tube surface, it may further be important that it is well centered and can be arranged around the tube surface with a fixed circumferential length. This fixed circumference length is particularly useful when working with indicators in order to always be able to detect the same pattern along the circumference.
The device according to the invention can further be used in a method for welding a pipeline in a number of welding runs using a device according to the invention, wherein a first layer is laid during a first welding run and a second layer is laid in a next welding pass. The method is distinguished in that - after laying the first layer, the final location of the welding layer is determined on the basis of the indicators; - before laying the second layer, this end location is searched for on the basis of the indicators on the guide building.
Such a method thus allows a further automation of the welding process.
The above-mentioned and other features will be further elucidated below on the basis of an exemplary embodiment of the guiding device according to the invention which is described with reference to the drawings in the appendix. The drawings show: in figure 1 a detail of an embodiment of the guide building according to the invention which is arranged around a tube surface, with a welding torch as processing member; figure 2 shows a perspective view of an embodiment of the guide band according to the invention; figure 3A shows a top view of the tensioning means of the guide band of figure 2; figure 3B shows a section along line B-B in figure 3A; figure 3C shows a section along line C-C in figure 3A; Fig. 25 shows a section along line D-D in Fig. 3A in Figure 3D; figure 4 shows a top view of the embodiment of the guide band of figure 3 in the dismantled state; figure 5 shows a detail of the edge of the guide band shown in figure 4; Figs. 6A and 6B show a top view and section, respectively, along line VI-VI of Fig. 6A of a first part of a spacer; in figures 7A and 7B, respectively, a top view and a section along line VII-VII of figure 7A of a second part of a spacer.
Figure 1 schematically shows a device for welding tubes B together which have to be welded together with their end edges. The end edges 5 are typically shaped such that a weld groove L is formed when the tubes are placed against each other.
Such welding grooves are usually filled in several passes of the welding torch, wherein one layer of the welding material is laid down in the groove. One or more welding torches 1 can be used for this purpose. The welding torch is supported by a carrier 2 which is guided along a guide band which is fixed around one of the tube ends. In the embodiment shown, the welding torch 1 is connected to a flexible supply tube 5 for a protective gas, but this is not a requirement and depends on the welding technique used. The welding device per se is known to be known and is not part of the invention.
The carrier 2 is provided with four guide wheels 22 which have a U-shaped circumferential surface in which the guide edge 24 of the guide belt 3 is received. By biasing the opposite guide wheels 22 towards each other, for example through a coil spring package 25, the pair of wheels is held firmly against the sides of the guide belt 3 and pressed. The drive of the carrier 2 along the guide belt 3 can take place in any manner. In the embodiment shown, the drive is carried out by means of a drive wheel 26 which engages on the side edge of the guide belt and is driven by a drive mechanism (not shown). Such a carrier is assumed to be known and will not be explained in more detail here.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of the guide band 3 according to the invention in a ring-shaped state. Figure 4 shows a top view of the guide band in the extended state. The guide band is provided on its inner side with spacers 7 in which spring means 10 are arranged. Between the ends 5, 6 and the guide band 3 tensioning means are provided for tensioning around the tube surface as a ring. The tensioning means 4 are shown in more detail in figures 3A-3D. A first 6 element 13 of the tensioning means is attached to the end 6 by means of four screws 16. This first element 13 is provided with a screw bore 14. The second element 15 is attached to the other end 5 by means of four screws 16. This element is provided with an elongated cavity 17 for inserting a screw through it which is tightened in screw bore 14.
The guide band 3 is further provided with indicators arranged in a specific pattern, which here take the form of holes 8, 8 '. The pattern here consists of two sets of square holes. The first series are a number of square holes 8 arranged on a circumferential line for which the mutual distance between two adjacent holes gradually increases from end 6 to end 5. The second series is also formed by a number of square holes 8 'arranged on a circumferential line for which the mutual distance between two adjacent holes gradually decreases from end 6 to end 5. This gradual increase / decrease is identical for both series, such that when reversing the guide band, ie when exchanging the ends 5 and 6, an identical pattern is obtained.
A sensor (not shown) is provided in the carrier 2 for detecting this pattern. This sensor is coupled to a signal processing unit which is adapted to determine the location along the guide band on the basis of the holes detected by the sensor through which the carrier passes.
When laying pipelines, usually four to five welding steps must take place on the ship, the ship after each welding step sailing a certain distance, whereby the weld is brought to the next welding station and the next welding step can be carried out. With the aid of the indicators on the guide band and the sensor, the final location of the weld is determined after each welding step and passed on to the next welding station. In the next welding station, the welding torch is again brought to this location with the aid of the indicators and the sensor, such that the welding step begins exactly 7 where the previous welding step has ended. In this way welding can be done very accurately.
A possible embodiment of the spacer with spring means will now be described in detail with reference to Figures 3A-3D and Figures 6A-6B and 7A-7B. The spacer 7 comprises a spring holder 31 and a spring carrier 30 accommodated therein. The spring carrier 30 is connected to the guide belt by means of a screw 38. The spring holder 31 has limited movement in the direction of the guide belt. This is achieved by providing the spring holder 31 with an opening 35 with dimensions which are such that the spring holder 31 can move along the circumference of the spring carrier 30 in the direction of the guide band. The freedom of movement is herein adjustable by means of a screw 37 (see figure 3B) which protrudes through the opening 35 of the spring holder 31 and is screwed tightly into a screw bore 36 in the spring holder 30. There are disc springs between the spring carrier 30 and the spring holder 31 10 employed. The shape of the spring carrier 30 and of the spring holder 31 must therefore be matched to each other in such a way that on the one hand spring means can be received in the spring holder 31 and on the other hand the spring holder 31 is movable to a limited extent with respect to the spring carrier 30. In the embodiment shown the spring holder 31 is substantially cup-shaped with a bottom 32 provided with an opening 35, and 25 with a cylindrical wall 34. The spring support 30 here has the shape of a hollow cylinder 32 in which thread is provided and the upper end of which is provided with a radially oriented collar 33. However, those skilled in the art will appreciate that other shapes are possible for the spring holder 31 and spring carrier 30. Furthermore, the contact surface between the spring holder and the curved surface on which the guide belt is mounted should preferably be as small as possible in order to reduce friction with the curved surface. To that end, the spring holder 31 preferably has a rounded bottom 35, as can best be seen in Figure 7B, and the area of the annular support surface is preferably as small as possible.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described above and certainly not to the treatment of 8 pipelines. Any surface on which a flexible guide band can be suitably attached falls within the scope of the invention. Furthermore, the skilled person will understand that many different patterns of indicators are possible. The scope of the present invention is therefore only determined by the claims in appendix.
