Abstract

A moving bed bioreactor (100) comprises a reactor vessel (1), which comprises a treatment section (30) for holding a plurality of biofilm carrier elements (6). The moving bed bioreactor (100) also comprises an agitator for imparting motion to the biofilm carrier elements (6). The reactor vessel (1) is buoyant and comprises at least one sidewall and a lower wall (4), the at least one sidewall and/or the lower wall (4) having a plurality of apertures (3, 23) for allowing flow of water into and out of the chamber when the reactor vessel (1) is immersed in a body of water, each of said apertures (3, 23) being sized to prevent flow of the biofilm carrier elements (6) out of the reactor vessel (1).
