IN A FURNACE TOP PREHEATING APPARATUS, THE ABSORPTION OF METAL SCRAP INTO EXHAUST DUCTS OF THE FURNACE TOP PREHEATING APPARATUS IS PREVENTED, AND EVEN IF A PART OF THE METAL SCRAP IS ABSORBED, THE METAL SCRAP IS TRAPPED ON THE UPPERMOST SIDE OF AN EXHAUST GAS PROCESSING DEVICE, ACCORDINGLY, THE METAL SCRAP IS NEITHER ACCUMULATED WITHIN THE EXHAUST GAS DUCT ON THE DOWNSTREAM SIDE NOR BROUGHT TO A DEODORING TOWER, A COOLER OR A DUST COLLECTION DEVICE, IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAINTAIN A SMOOTH FLOW OF THE EXHAUST GAS AND TO MAINTAIN THE FUNCTION OF THE DEODORING TOWER, THE COOLER OR THE DUST COLLECTION DEVICE; IN THE FURNACE TOP PREHEATING APPARATUS PROVIDED WITH A PREHEATING DEVICE PROVIDED AT A FURNACE TOP OF A SMELTING FURNACE (11, 12) AND AN EXHAUST GAS PROCESSING DEVICE (101, 102) CONNECTED TO THE PREHEATING DEVICE, THE PREHEATING DEVICE BEING PROVIDED WITH A SHAFT PROVIDED AT THE FURNACE TOP OF THE SMELTING FURNACE, ONE OR MORE PREHEATING CHAMBERS (51, 52, 53) BEING FORMED IN THE SHAFT (21, 22) IN THE VERTICAL DIRECTION, AND EXHAUST GAS DUCTS (71~75) HAVING RESPECTIVE DAMPERS (61~65) BEING CONNECTED TO EACH UPPER WALL OF THE SHAFT FOR FORMING EACH PREHEATING CHAMBER (51,52,53) AND A SHAFT WALL BELOW THE LOWERMOST PREHEATING CHAMBER.
