Abstract
A METHOD OF FABRICATING AN UNDERGROUND CONCRETE (OR OTHER CEMENTITIOUS) STRUCTURE IS DISCLOSED. THE METHOD INVOLVES CASTING THE STRUCTURE IN SITU TO A LEVEL ABOVE THE DESIRED CUT-OFF LEVEL AND, BEFORE THE CONCRETE HAS SET, INTRODUCING A NON-CEMENTITIOUS MATERIAL E.G. WATER OR A GRANULAR SOLID INTO THE CONCRETE IN THE REGION ABOVE THE DESIRED CUT-OFF LEVEL SO AS TO FORM A WEAKENED ZONE IN THAT REGION. THE MATERIAL IS PREFERABLY INTRODUCED INTO THE CONCRETE BY MEANS OF A PIPE HAVING AT ITS LOWER END A SUITABLE OUTLET ARRANGEMENT, E.G. IN THE FORM OF A GENERALLY HORIZONTAL CROSS-MEMBER OR A TUBULAR PIPE PROVIDED WITH OUTLETS. FLUID MAY BE EJECTED INTO THE STRUCTURE FROM THE PIPE AS THE PIPE IS RAISED FROM A LEVEL JUST ABOVE THE DESIRED CUT-OFF LEVEL, OR ALTERNATIVELY FLUID MAY BE EJECTED FROM THE PIPE DURING BOTH THE LOWERING AND RAISING STAGES.(FIG.3a)
