La invencion proporciona un novedoso acido nucleico de sucrosa sintasa aislado y su proteina codificada. La presente invencion tambien proporciona metodos y composiciones relacionadas a la alteracion de los niveles de sucrosa sintasa en plantas y en particular, en tallos de plantas y/o semillas de plantas.
