Abstract

La presente invencion se relaciona con materiales de espuma poliméricos, comprimibles, utiles como aislamiento. Estas espumas poliméricas son preparadas mediante la polimerizacion de ciertas emulsiones de agua en aceite que tienen una relacion de la fase agua a la fase de aceite relativamente elevada, comunmente conocidas en la técnica como "HIPE". Los materiales de espuma poliméricos comprenden una estructura de espuma polimérica de celdas abiertas interconectadas, generalmente hidrofobica, flexible, semiflexible o rígida, no ionica. Estas estructuras de espuma de por lo menos 0.01 m2/cm3; (b) una densidad expandida de menos de 0.05 g3-cm; y (c) una relacion de espesor expandido a comprimido de por lo menos 3:1; en donde cuando la espuma está comprimida al 33% de su espesor original expandido y es posteriormente mantenido sin restriccion artificial sobre su superficie, dicha espuma reexpanderá por no más de 50% después de 21 días a temperatura ambiente (22 degree C). En una modalidad preferida, las espumas de la presente invencion, cuando se calientan a su Tg o mayor, estas reexpanderá al 90% de su espesor original dentro de 1 día o menos. La invencion también se relaciona con un procedimiento para la elaboracion del material de espuma polimérico, comprimible, que comprende el polimerizar una emulsion de agua en aceite que tiene una relacion de fase de agua a fase de aceite en la escala de aproximadamente 20:1 a aproximadamente 250:1.
