Abstract

Se describe un procedimiento continuo para remover ácido polifosforico de un filamento de material absorbente de polibenzazol, el cual comprende: a) poner en contacto el filamento de material absorbente con agua o una mezcla de agua y ácido polifosforico, bajo condiciones suficientes para reducir el contenido de fosforo del filamento a menos de 10,000 ppm en peso; y después, b) poner en contacto el filamento de material absorbente con una solucion acuosa de una base inorgánica, bajo condiciones suficientes para convertir por lo menos 50% de los grupos de ácido polifosforico presentes en el filamento a una sal de la base y el ácido. Se ha descubierto que poniendo en contacto el filamento de material absorbente con una solucion de una base, después de lavar el filamento para remover la mayor parte del fosforo residual, después de lavar el filamento para remover la mayor parte del fosforo residual, ventajosamente conduce a una mejora en la resistencia inicial a la tension del filamento, así como una retencion mejorada de la resistencia a la tension y/o el peso molecular (del polímero de polibenzazol) después de exponerse a la luz y/o a altas temperaturas.
