Abstract

La presente invención se refiere a un procedimiento para producir manitol a partir de glucosa; caracterizado por el hecho de que una solución de glucosa, polímeros de glucosa o una mezcla de glucosa y sus polímeros, que tiene un contenido de carbohidrato por lo menos del 50 por ciento en peso, aproximadamente, se pone en contacto con un catalizador que contiene molibdeno en estado hexavalente a una temperatura por lo menos de 70°C, aproximadamente, con lo cual se obtiene una solución que contiene glucosa y manosa; la solución de glucosa y manosa se hidrogena a temperatura elevada, en presencia de un catalizador de hidrogenación, produciendose así una solución acuosa que contiene sorbitol y manitol, y de dicha solución se recupera manitol.
