Abstract
La presente invención se refiere a un proceso para preparar una composición de recubrimiento con un aditivo de tiempo abierto que comprende las etapas de a) poner en contacto una dispersión acuosa de partículas de polímero hinchables en álcali con un modificador de la reología y un aglutinante para formar una composición de recubrimiento con un VOC de menos de 50 g/L; y b) neutralizar las partículas hinchables en álcali con una base no volátil al entrar en contacto o después de entrar en contacto con el modificador de la reología y el aglutinante para formar partículas de polímero de múltiples etapas hinchadas; en donde las partículas de polímero hinchables en álcali comprenden una cubierta que tiene una Tg de no más de 25°C y un núcleo funcionalizado con ácido; y en donde la relación de núcleo con respecto a cubierta está en el intervalo de 1:3.2 a 1:10. La composición que surge del proceso de la presente invención es útil para mejorar el tiempo abierto, especialmente para aplicaciones de recubrimiento de VOC bajo. En otro aspecto, la presente invención se refiere a la preparación de la composición de recubrimiento con un aditivo de tiempo abierto que comprende las etapas de a) poner en contacto el aditivo de tiempo abierto con un modificador de la reología y un aglutinante para formar una composición de recubrimiento con un VOC de menos de 50 g/L, luego b) neutralizar el aditivo de tiempo abierto para formar partículas de polímero de múltiples etapas hinchadas, en donde la composición de recubrimiento con el aditivo de tiempo abierto exhibe un aumento de viscosidad de menos de 50% en comparación con la composición de recubrimiento sin el aditivo de tiempo abierto.
