Abstract

Se describe un copolímero que contiene cationes multivalentes derivado de uno o más ácidos etilénicamente insaturados. El copolímero tiene las siguientes características: (a) una viscosidad intrínseca de al menos alrededor de 3 dl/g cuando se mide en una solución de NaCI 1 M a 25 °C; (b) el copolímero se deriva de una mezcla de monómeros que comprende un ácido etilénicamente insaturado y al menos un comonómero, el ácido etilénicamente insaturado presente en una cantidad en el rango de alrededor de 5 % a alrededor de 65 % en peso; y (c) un contenido de comonómero residual de menos de 1000 ppm cuando el comonómero es una acrilamida. El copolímero, entre otros, es útil como floculante para el tratamiento de una suspensión acuosa que comprende material particulado, preferentemente, relaves de una operación de minería.
