Abstract

The invention relates to the use of an electrolytic bath for obtaining composite coatings containing nickel, phosphorus and silicon carbide (Ni-P-SiC), along with a thermal treatment, as a possible substitute of current hard Chromium coatings. The method for producing hard Ni-P-SiC comprises the following steps: a) adding P3+ ions to an electrolytic bath containing dissolved Ni salts, b) adding to the electrolytic bath nanoparticles of SiC suspended in a polyethoxylated compound, c) electrodepositing the metal composite coating containing Ni-P-SiC by applying direct-current density, d) performing a thermal post-treatment to the coating which increases the hardness up to 1000HV, approximately. The thermal treatment allows the intermetallic compound of Ni3P to be formed, also removing the hydrogen absorbed by the coating.
