La invención pertenece a ciertas variantes genéticas sobre el cromosoma 5p12 y el cromosoma 10q26 como variantes de susceptibilidad del cáncer de mama. Se describen también los métodos de manejo de la enfermedad, incluyendo el diagnóstico de la susceptibilidad incrementada y/o disminuida hacia el cáncer de mama, los métodos para predecir la respuesta a la terapia y los métodos para predecir el pronóstico utilizando tales variantes. La invención se refiere además a los kits útiles en los métodos de la invención.
