Abstract

Se proporciona un método y un dispositivo que logran la extirpación de tejido así como también la coagulación de tejido de manera sustancialmente simultánea durante el tratamiento de hiperplasia prostática benigna (BPH) utilizando al menos dos longitudes de onda de luz. El método y el dispositivo mejoran el flujo urinario y reducen al mínimo la pérdida de sangre posterior al tratamiento, mientras que mantienen un campo de operación casi libre de sangre durante el tratamiento, irradiándolo de manera sustancialmente simultánea con al menos dos longitudes de onda diferentes. El presente dispositivo y método usan fibras ópticas que incluyen en modalidades preferidas fibras ópticas de emisión lateral especial para proporcionar un tratamiento práctico, mínimamente invasivo, de próstatas agrandadas. De acuerdo con la presente invención, la extirpación del tejido es afectada teniendo una longitud de onda que es absorbida grandemente en el tejido prostático, mientras que otra longitud de onda absorbida en menor grado coagula los tejidos hiperplásicos circundantes mientras que mantiene mínimo el daño térmico al tejido normal que rodea a la hiperplasia. En una modalidad preferida, la longitud de onda con alto grado de absorción es de aproximadamente 1460 nm y la menos absorbida por el agua pero con absorción significativa de hemoglobina es de aproximadamente 980 nm. Esta combinación ayuda al paciente reduciendo la pérdida de sangre y edema. Puede ayudar al médico, especialmente cuando se empelan técnicas de formación de imagen, manteniendo un área sustancialmente libre de sangre durante el tratamiento.
