Description
Process for depositing a metal with a high melting point on a steel strip by vacuum evaporation.
The present invention relates to a method of depositing a metal with a high melting point on a steel strip by vacuum evaporation, in particular on a cold rolled steel strip.
The technique of coating by vacuum evaporation, also called PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), has been known for a long time. It consists in placing an object to be coated in a vacuum enclosure and in spraying a coating material in this enclosure. Vapors are deposited by condensing on cooler surfaces, and in particular on the object where they form the desired deposit. The tightness of the enclosure must be as perfect as possible, on the one hand to avoid any drop in the deposit yield resulting from an insufficient vacuum, and on the other hand to eliminate the risks of oxidation or other pollution of the material to be deposited or the object to be coated.
Various attempts have so far been made to deposit, by vacuum evaporation, high melting point metals to form stainless coatings on steel objects. These attempts have not met with industrial success due to several major drawbacks. In the first place, they led to deposits having an unacceptable porosity. Secondly, the installations used did not offer a sufficient seal at the entry and exit of the vacuum chambers; the result was that the deposition yields were poor and that the quality of the deposits obtained, and in particular their ductility, was not satisfactory.
The present applicant has recently proposed a new type of airlock, which ensures perfect sealing of the vacuum enclosure without the slightest risk of deterioration of the surface of the product, regardless of the shape and dimensions of this product. This new airlock, which is described in document BE-A-09100672, consists of a liquid bath forming a siphon between the outside and the inside of the vacuum enclosure, the strip passing through an airlock of this type at the entrance and exit of the enclosure.
The aim of the present invention is to propose a process making it possible, by vacuum evaporation, to produce stainless coatings of excellent quality on continuous substrates, while exhibiting high deposition yields thanks to an absolute sealing of the enclosure under empty.
The process of the present invention is essentially intended for a substrate constituted by a cold rolled steel strip having a carbon content of less than 0.02%, preferably less than 0.005%, this carbon being advantageously fixed by at least an element such as Ti, Nb, V. The steel may also contain one or more of the following elements: 0.05 - 2% Mn, maximum 3% of Cr, Al and / or Si, possibly added to give it resistance mechanical suitable for cold and / or hot.
In accordance with the present invention, a method of depositing a metal with a high melting point on a steel strip by vacuum evaporation, in which the strip is preheated before coating it by vacuum evaporation, is characterized in that the strip is preheated to a temperature of at least 300 ° C. under a non-oxidizing atmosphere, in that said high-melting metal is deposited by vacuum evaporation on at least one of the faces of the strip, until the metal layer thus deposited has reached a predetermined thickness, in that the coated strip is brought to a temperature between its recrystallization temperature and 1050 ° C., in that it is kept at this temperature for at least 5 seconds to recrystallize the strip and the metal deposited, and in that it is finally cooled to room temperature.
In a manner known per se, the steel strip, which is initially wound into a coil, is usually subjected to degreasing, cleaning and possibly brightening operations on the surface, before the coating operation.
The preheating of the strip can be carried out under a reducing atmosphere, for example of the HNX type, preferably in an enclosure separate from the actual coating enclosure; the strip must then pass directly from the preheating chamber to the coating chamber, without exposure to air.
The strip can also be preheated under vacuum, preferably in the coating enclosure, in particular electrically.
The preheating temperature is advantageously chosen as a function of the melting point of the metal to be deposited. In fact, the vaporized metal which is deposited on the strip yields to the latter, by condensing, a certain amount of heat which contributes to heating the strip.
It is possible to regulate this heating so that the temperature of the coated strip approaches, and preferably reaches, the recrystallization temperature of the strip and of the coating, namely at least 700 "C, in order to favor the adhesion of the coating on the steel strip.
The nature of the metal deposited and / or the thickness of the coating may be such that the temperature reached by the coated strip is insufficient to cause the desired recrystallization. In this case, the coated strip is heated, preferably electrically, to the required temperature between the recrystallization temperature of the strip and / or the coating and 1050 ° C., and preferably between 750 ° C. and 10 ° C. To conduct this heating optimally, the temperature of the strip can be measured, possibly continuously, by any known means.
The recrystallization temperature of the strip may be different from that of the coating. It should be understood that the recrystallization temperature considered here is the higher of the two values of recrystallization temperatures corresponding respectively to the strip and to the coating.
The duration of maintenance of the coated strip at this temperature depends in particular on the nature of the metal deposited, the thickness of the coating and the temperature.
Within the meaning of the present invention, it should be understood that the deposited metal may be a single metal, such as chromium or nickel, or a mixture of metals such as chromium and nickel evaporated simultaneously in the vacuum enclosure. It is also possible to deposit layers of different metals by passing the strip through successive vacuum chambers, the recrystallization heating then being carried out.
As indicated above, it is important that the steel strip has as low a free carbon content as possible. Carbon diffusion in the coating must be avoided as much as possible during the high temperature recrystallization operation. The presence of carbon in the coating would make it age and degrade its ability to deform.
Maintaining the coated strip at the recrystallization temperature does not constitute an overaging annealing of the coating. The recrystallization carried out removes the porosity of the coating and improves its ductility. In addition, this annealing can cause the formation of intermetallic compounds by reaction between the strip and the coating. At the entry and exit of the vacuum coating enclosure, the strip preferably passes through airlocks constituted by liquid baths forming siphons between the outside and the inside of the vacuum enclosure.
It would not be departing from the scope of the invention for the liquid bath of the entry lock, respectively of the exit lock of the vacuum enclosure, to contribute to the preheating of the strip, respectively to the final cooling of the coated strip. Likewise, a strip coated with metal with a high melting point can still subsequently receive an additional coating, such as a zinc coating by galvanizing on one side or on both sides.
