The invention relates to a lid made of thermoplastic synthetic material, preferably transparent, intended to be applied to open egg containers made of wood pulp, cardboard, expanded or hard plastic material, and the like. Said containers are intended to contain a number of eggs, for example 20, 24, 30, 36, and are known as egg trays. They consist of a number of cavities spaced by frustoconical reliefs or in trunks of pyramids, with or without reinforcing ribs, to receive the eggs. The object of the invention is to produce a cover 5 which eliminates the drawbacks which have just been mentioned. Taking into account the fact that the same numerical index designates in the figures the same or equivalent parts, with reference to Figures 1 and 2, it can be seen that the cover 14 is substantially in the form of a trunk of a pyramid, the upper face 15 is almost rectangular and is provided with frustoconical cavities 16 capable of delimiting with the coating film shock-absorbing air cushions between the upper part of the eggs supported by the tray, not shown, and the coating film 25 also not shown. It is obvious that the frustoconical cavities 16 can in practice be made in the form of a pyramid trunk without the invention being modified in its essential characteristics.

On the face 15, between the cavities 16, 30 frustoconical depressions 17 are hollowed out with curved parts 18 towards the interior of the depressions, converging towards the bottoms 19. On the side wall 20 of the cover, a continuous rim 21 is formed, at the height of the plane passing through the bottoms 19, so that when the cover is placed on the container, the bottoms 19 are supported on the reliefs of the container while the rim 21 is supported on the peripheral reliefs thereof. On the side wall of the cover are hollowed out recesses corresponding to half of the frustoconical depressions 17, 18, 19 which, with their bottom part 19, 5 determine the extensions of the rim 21 towards the inside - of the cover. Said extensions are thus connected to the upper face 15 by walls whose configuration and conicity correspond to those of the depressions 17, 18 and 19. Each of these extensions of the rim 21 is connected to the upper face 15 of the cover 14 by recesses in the trunk of a pyramid 22 with side walls 2¾ but it is obvious that all the extensions of the rim 21 can be connected in any case to the upper face of the cover without the invention being therefore modified in its essential characteristics.

Said recesses 22, 23 are guide elements, in cooperation with the side wall 20 of the cover located under the rim 21, for the correct positioning of the cover 14 on the tray containing the eggs and, at the same time, said recesses prevent any movement of the cover during the wrapping operation with a film of the packaging since they each bear against the side wall of the peripheral reliefs of the container.

These recesses 22, 23 prevent the curvature towards the outside of the side wall 20 of the cover during the coating operation, being in this seconded by the edge formed by the rim 21 with the side wall 20, and by the lower part of the side wall folded outwardly and upward to form a groove 24 of reinforcement 30 surrounds ending in an edge 25 outwardly.
