Abstract

상하부 기판 및 그의 표면상에 형성된 전극 및 그의 전면에 걸쳐 형성된 배향막, 기판사이에 삽입된 네마틱액정, 및 상술한 액정분자의 종축을 이동시키기 위한 구동 수단을 포함하고, 이때 구동수단은 액정에 전압을 인가하는 것에 의해 상부 기판과 인접하는 액정 분자의 종축이 기판에 대하여 틸트각을 갖고 또 하부 기판과 인접하는 액정분자의 종축이 하부 기판에 대하여 평행인 반면 기판면에 투영된 상부 및 하부 기판과 인접하는 액정분자의 종축이 하부 기판에 대하여 틸트각을 갖고 또 상부 기판과 인접하는 액정분자의 종축이 상부 기판과 평행인 반면 기판들에 투영된 하부 및 상부 기판과 인접하는 액정분자의 종축이 일반적으로 동일한 방향으로 배향된 제2상태 사이에서 선택적으로 쌍안정적으로 스위칭시키는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.

제1도는 본 발명에 따른 액정표시장치의 개략도.

Claims (9)

  1. 표면상에 소정 패턴으로 형성된 전극을 갖는 각 기판에 대하여 일반적으로 평행 및 반대방행 관계로 배치된 상하부 기판 및 기판 전체 표면에 걸쳐 형성된 배향막, 기판사이에 삽입된 액정 및 상술한 액정분자의 종축을 이동시키기 위한 구동 수단을 포함하고 있고, 이때 액정은 네마틱 액정이고, 배향막은 측쇄에 적어도 한개의 6원 고리기를 갖는 고분자 막으로 형성되고 또 1축 방향으로 배향처리되며, 구동수단은 액정에 전압을 인가하는 것에 의해 상부 기판과 인접하는 액정분자의 종축이 기판에 대하여 털트각을 갖고 또 하부 기판과 인접하는 액정분자의 종축이 하부 기판에 대하여 평행인 반면 기판면에 투영된 상부 및 하부 기판과 인접하는 액정분자의 종축이 일반적으로 동일한 방향으로 배향딘 제1상태, 및 하부 기판과 인접하는 액정분자의 종축이 하부 기판에 대하여 털트각을 갖고 또 상부 기판과 인접하는 액정분자의 종숙이 상부 기판과 평행인 반면 기판들에 투영된 하부 및 상부 기판과 인접하는 액정분자의 종축이 일반적으로 동일한 방향으로 배향된 제2상태 사이에서 선택적으로 쌍안정적으로 스위칭시키는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  2. 제1항에 있어서 , 배향막상의 액정분가가 상기 배향막의 배향처리 방향과 평행하는 제1방향 또는 상기 배향막의 배향처리의 방향과 10내지 80°편향된 제2방향을 나타내고 제1 및 제2배향은 프리틸트각에서 상이한 액정표시장치.
  3. 제1항에 있어서, 고분자가, 폴리스티렌, 포리(2-브로모스티렌), 폴리(3-브로모스티렌), 폴리(4-브로모스티렌), 폴리(2-클로로스티렌), 폴리(3-클로로스티렌), 폴리(4-클로로스티렌), 폴리(2-니트로스티렌), 폴리(2-페닐스티렌), 폴리(2-메틸스티렌), 폴리(2-메록시스티렌), 폴리(2-히드록시스티렌), 폴리(2-비닐피리딘), 폴리(4-비닐피리딘) 및 폴리비닐카르바졸을 포함하는 군데서 선정된 액정표시장치.
  4. 제1항에 있어서, 상부 및 하부 기판이 상부 기판상의 배향막의 배향 및 하부 기판상의 배향막이 서로 0내지 90°로 트위스트되는 반대 관게로 배치된 액정표시장치.
  5. 제4항에 있어서, 상부 기판상의 배향막의 방향 및 하부 기판상의 배향막의 방향이 서로 약45°로 트위스트된 액정 표시장치.
  6. 제1항에 있어서, 액정이 키럴 도펀트를 함유하는 액정표시장치.
  7. 제6항에 있어서, 부가된 키럴 도펀트의 양이 하기 부등호식을 만족하는 양인 액정표시장치:0.05〈d/p〈0.1식중에서, d는 액정표시장치의 두께이고 또 p는 액정의 키럴피치이다.
  8. 제1항에 있어서, 액정이 색소와 혼합된 액정표시장치.
  9. 제8항에 있어서, 상기 기판들이 상부 기판상의 배향막의 방향 및 하부 기판상의 배향막이 방향이 서로 약90°로 트위스트되는 반대관계로 배치된 액정표시장치.
