Abstract

An electrolytic cell has anolyte and catholyte chambers sepd. by a permionic membrane. The cathodic surface of the membrane has an electrically conductive, non-electrocatalytic material in contact with the surface. The electrically conductive material is pref.. Group IB metal, e.g. Cu, Ag, Au and their oxides. The particle size of the material is 0.1 micron to -200 mesh. The material distributes current across the cathodic surface of the membrane, thus reducing the voltage of the zero-gap permionic membrane electrolytic cell.
